The Car Crash Detective – The Top Safest Cars By Side Impact. Some cars provide a satisfying.thunk. when you close their doors. Other cars, not so much. The thunk sound is what you need to hear when buying a safe car because side impacts are the most likely to be fatal.

Twenty years ago this month, millions of people were glued to their television sets as news helicopters broadcast a swarm of police cars chasing football star O.J. Simpson in a white Ford Bronco. If that chase happened today, it might be harder to spot his white car from the sky, because in 2014 white cars are the most popular on the road.
In the U.S., white was the most popular car color for the last eight years, according to Axalta Coating Systems, a supplier of liquid and powder coatings. Between 2001 and 2005, the No. 1 car color was silver, but white was still No. 2. Last year, white was also the most popular car color in Asia, Europe and South America. In 1994, the year of Simpson’s infamous (and slow) car chase along a Los Angeles freeway, the most popular car color was green/teal/aqua, red was No. 2 and white was No. 3.
Car colors appear to track trends in the latest technology, says Jessica Caldwell, senior analyst at Edmunds.com, a website resource for automobiles. “I just bought a new white car for the first time a few months ago,” she says. “It seems like flashier colors were prevalent in the 1990s along with iMacs — teal, hunter green, purple. In the 2000s, silver dominated as that represented the new tech world. Stainless appliances were all the rage as well. Apple has made white popular because of the iPhone colors.”
While white cars may not be the most visible in a blizzard, white cars may be safer than black ones. Black cars have a 12% higher crash risk relative to white cars in daylight, followed by gray (11% higher), silver (10%) and blue and red (7%), according to a 2007 study of two decades and more than 850,000 car accidents by Monash University Accident Research Centre in Victoria, Australia. At dawn and dusk, black vehicles were found to have a 47% higher crash risk than white (silver was 15% higher and gray was 27% higher).
There are also more practical considerations. Darker cars absorb more sunlight and get hotter in the summer, so white cars are more common in southern states like Florida and the Middle East, says Joe Wiesenfelder, executive editor of Cars.com. And white cars may not be a nightmare to clean, he adds. “One would think a white car would get dirty easily, but dark ones might be even tougher,” he says. “A little rain can cover a black car with water spots, whereas white cars look the same unless you get really close.”

The upside of buying a white car: Consumers are less likely to get sick of the color compared with red, orange or beige, and the consistently high demand for white cars means they tend to hold their value in the resale market. “Bolder colors sometimes depreciate faster, depending on trends,” Wiesenfelder says. Contrary to this conventional wisdom, however, one study by used-cars dealing site iSeeCars.com found less popular car colors in yellow and orange show lower depreciation than white, silver and black.
There are also slight gender differences in relation to color. Men have a 7% stronger preference for white cars than women, according to an analysis of 30 million used-car listings by dealing site iSeeCars.com. Women tend to prefer less flashy colors: They’re 9% more likely to choose silver or brown models, while men are 12% more likely to go for cars in red and orange. But white and black are the most popular among used cars listings: 15% are white versus 17% black — and white is the most popular for pick-up trucks.
